Two Is Always Better Than One

This week on FlixFling, we’re seeing double! Not one, but two, stunning new documentaries from Magnolia Pictures are featured as our FridayFlix movie picks. First up is the acclaimed feature, The Wolfpack, the Grand Jury Prize winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival from first time director, Crystal Moselle. The film follows the seven Angulo brothers, isolated from society in their Lower East Side Manhattan apartment as per the demands of their father. As a strict Hare Krishna with fears of the material world, the Angulo patriarch kept the boys confined for the majority of their childhood, letting them venture outside only once or twice a year.  The brothers turned to movies as an escape from their everyday existence, immersing themselves in the worlds of their favorite films by crafting costumes and props, transcribing screenplays and reenacting classic scenes. It was through film that the boys learned much about the outside world, and while their assimilation into society has not been without its challenges, their enthusiasm and curiosity for life is palpable. Poignant, completely unique, and utterly mesmerizing, The Wolfpack is a stirring account of the triumph of the human spirit that will not be soon forgotten.

It only makes sense for one of the finest and most well known athletes of all time, Dirk Nowitzki, to have a film all about his worthy accomplishments. However, this week’s second featured release, Nowitzki: The Perfect Shot, goes beyond Nowitzki being the first non-American to lead his team to an NBA victory. The Perfect Shot is appealing to die hard fans, as well as those outside the world of basketball, which is often a challenge when creating a sport documentary. Nowitzki’s easy-going and humble personality gives a fresh insight on athletes and the different challenges they undergo while in the spotlight. Viewers get the inside scoop on the charming All-Star player with exclusive footage and interviews from his family members, friendly coach and mentor Holger Geschwindner, NBA legends such as Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Yao Ming, and owner of the Dallas Mavericks team Mark Cuban. As The Perfect Shot is released in theaters today, FlixFling invites you to check it out with us! The Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Leopold Hoesch and director Sebastian Dehnhardt offer a story that goes beyond the game and into what it takes to make the perfect shot.
