15 May Slow West Review
Wanted: Dead or Alive
As studio A24’s new western thriller, Slow West, is released in theaters today, we invite you to join us in watching the movie on FlixFling! Set in Colorado in the 19th century, Slow West follows Jay (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a young Scottish boy, as he searches on horseback to find Rose (Caren Pistorius), the woman he loves. Silas (Michael Fassbender), the mysterious and cynical bounty hunter, offers Jay protection in exchange for money. Ironically, Rose and her father are the two fugitives that Silas has been searching for, which Jay, unaware and naïve, is now leading him to. The $2,000 reward on the wanted poster has attracted more than just Silas, and the duo have an unexpected run in with a fellow bounty hunter (Ben Mendelsohn) and his band of outlaws. After a drunken stupor, Jay and Silas finally end up at their destination where they encounter the gang they had hoped to avoid. Dead or alive one of the hunters must exchange Rose and her father in order to receive the cash and these men haven’t traveled across the American frontier for nothing.
In order to portray America in the late 1800’s, Slow West was ironically filmed in New Zealand. Breathtaking shots of neon green grass fields with incredibly large snow-capped mountains reaching up to the turquoise sky filled with fluffy clouds made the audience feel like they were watching something surreal. Cinematographer Robbie Ryan clearly paid close attention to the details and composition of each shot to set a particular tone. For this reason alone, viewers are immediately more receptive to the movie since it’s obvious from the beginning that setting plays a huge role in telling the story.
