A film as light-hearted as the sweet dreams of immigrants and as sour as their struggles to survive. Michel is a reformed petty criminal from France creating a new life for himself in New York City. One day he pursues a vivacious girl on roller blades, intrigued by her beauty and finds romance with Zoe, a law student. When the US immigration office apprehends him because his visa has expired, Zoe enlists her favorite law professor’s aid. Michel is left with a short time to gather the money needed to avoid deportation. Though desperate and tempted to use his pickpocket skills, honesty has become Michel’s obsession and convincing the striking Zoe of Camembert’s virtues his mission.
