Tapestry Vineyard: Formerly known as Merrivale, the winery was renamed Tapestry when the Clipsal Group, under the charter of Robert Gerard, bought it in 1997. This marked the beginning of significant developments, aimed at creating a premier boutique winery in the region. Originally farmed by early settlers, the Tapestry vineyards are divided into two separate areas. Twenty acres surround the winery cellar door and 80 acres are at Bakers Gully, an elevated sub region of the McLaren Valley. The winery only produces super premium strict varietal table wines and not blended varietals. McLaren Vale is one of the few wine growing regions that has the ability to consistently produce high quality fruit each year. The progress of the grapes in the vineyards is carefully monitored to ensure each variety achieves optimum ripeness prior to harvest. The vines at Baker’s Gully produce 30-year-old low yielding Shiraz ,Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling varieties growing in sandy loam over limestone. Recent plantings include Chardonnay and Verdelho. In the pursuit of quality, Tapestry adopts the philosophy that wines should be made that truly express their varietal and regional characteristics. Tapestry’s 2002 Riesling finished in The Advertiser Top 100 with a score of 94. Tapestry wines are now exported overseas to many countries including the UK.
