Devils Lair Vineyard: Relatively unknown a decade ago, Devil’s Lair has risen from obscurity to become a serious competitor to Coonawarrra as the Cabernet region of Australia. The vineyard takes it name from the nearby Devil’s Lair cave – an ancient, mysterious burial ground in an area known to have been inhabited 40,000 years ago. Fossil remains of the elusive Tasmanian Devil have been discovered on the site and this is believed to be the origin of the cave’s name. Situated on the southern end of the Leeuwin Peninsula in Western Australia, the 200 hectare estate is planted with noble varieties in deep draining ironstone gravel. The current vineyard planting totals 40 hectares. The first vines were established in 1981. A man-made 14 hectare lake in the central valley of the vineyard provides supplementary drip irrigation. The attitude of the team at Devil’s Lair is to preserve the near perfect conditions nature has given them and they run the vineyard with a sustainable management philosophy. Fruit from the vineyard was first vintaged under the estate’s own label in 1990. Prior to this the annual crush was sold to other wineries. Only Devil’s Lair grown fruit is used in the estate labels wine with approximately 500 tonnes of fruit processed annually. Devil’s Lair wines are not only popular in Australia they have a following in the US and the UK. The premium range focuses on the grape varieties Margaret River is recognized for – Cabernet and Chardonnay.
