Jacob’s Creek Vineyard: The Jacob’s Creek wine brand originated over 25 years ago with a Cabernet Shiraz Malbec. It now has a large and diverse wine portfolio that has found favor with wine lovers around the world. Jacob’s Creek was named in 1837 at the very moment when the Barossa Valley was discovered, surveyed and prepared for settlement. Colonel William Light named the creek after his surveyor William Jacob. Jacob and his brother settled on the banks of the creek and eventually planted vines on their land. This vineyard was sold to Orlando in 1919. Orlando itself was started by a German settler, Johann Gramp, who arrived in 1847 with cuttings from his native Bavaria. He settled upstream from the Jacob brothers and produced his first vintage – a hock – in 1850. Jacob’s Creek is now the most successful brand of Australian export wine. It is sold in over 60 countries around the world with over 5.3 million nine litre cases being exported each year. The new $5 million Jacob’s Creek visitor’s centre opened in September 2002. It is located on the banks of the original Jacob’s Creek, near where Orlando founder Johann Gramp planted his first vines. The centre has been designed to harmonize with its environment, use the natural colors of the region, and provide minimum disturbance to the natural vegetation. The centre encompasses a fully equipped restaurant and a gallery area, which showcases historical facts of the Barossa and the Jacob’s Creek brand.
