He tried to comfort his loving mother Katie (Natassja Kinski) when her disturbing mood swings bring her to the edge of hysteria. He ignores the fights between his mom and her antagonistic boyfriend Curt (Jason Cairns), by slipping easily into a private world of vivid daydreams. A ray of light appears when James meets retired ex-psychiatrist Henry (Robert Forster), who is fixing up his sailboat at the local marina. The boy thrusts himself into the man’s life by helping to prepare the boat for a new paint job. At home, Katie tries her best to give love and attention to her son, even as she slowly sinks into a deep well of self-loathing and loneliness.
