Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins effectively portrays criminal attorney Arthur Jamison, a man who fantasizes about committing the “perfect crime.” When his wife (Blythe Danner) seeks to divorce him, it becomes evident that her alimony demands will wipe out his assets, leaving Jamison financially devastated. With the help of his mistress (Swoosie Kurtz), the egocentric lawyer plots his wife’s demise. In order to test the various deadly scenarios, Jamison conjures up an imaginary double to carry out the deed in his mind. But will the crime ever leave the realm of fantasy and enter reality?
