Bill Kirby (John Gregson) is a mild-mannered insurance agent who also manages a surprising side business. Kirby notices he is being followed by a pair of suspicious characters, who have haunted him since a ride on the Channel ferry from Le Havre. Kirby craftily grabs some luggage belonging to a young woman (Prunella Ransome) and runs onto the ferry, avoiding the suspicious men. Later, Kirby convinces the woman to ferry him across the Strait of Solent before the unknown men capture them.
