Small Town Secrets
Best known for his FX episodes of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, “Mad Men”, and “Fargo”, director Matt Shakman’s featured FridayFlix, Cut Bank, is a quirky thriller set in the rural town of Cut Bank, Montana. The film follows Dwayne McLaren (Liam Hemsworth), a young man who is desperate to begin a new life in California with his beauty-queen girlfriend, Cassandra (Teresa Palmer). After “accidentally” catching a murder on his video camera of the town’s mailman (Bruce Dern), Dwayne is set to get a cash reward that could finally fulfill his dream. The well-known sheriff (John Malkovich) and Cassandra’s overbearing father (Billy Bob Thornton) find things to be obscure and continue the investigation. As things ironically progress, the infamous Derby Milton (Michael Stuhlbarg) demands his package that has been missing since the mailman was “murdered”, allegedly relating him to the crime.
Although we are familiar with this casts’ experience, Shakman really put each actor to the test in Cut Bank. While Liam Hemsworth was somber and failed to connect with the humorous perspective, Michael Stuhlbarg’s role as Derby Milton is most profound. His thick, outdated eye-glasses and filthy fingernails play a comical role in his creepy recluse behavior. Each time he appears, it’s hard to decide whether to laugh or worry, keeping viewers so engaged. Stuhlbarg’s dedicated performance is unlike any other and really portrays what the film is all about, making Cut Bank a must see movie for those who are interested in a unique thriller.
