15 Jan Keep Your Enemies Close
Beginning in 1970s South Boston, Black Mass follows the true story of Irish mobster James ‘Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) as he becomes one of the most powerful gangsters in Boston history. Whitey’s childhood friend turned FBI agent, James Connolly (Joel Edgerton), convinces him to work with the FBI to help destroy the Italian mob. This arrangement enables Bulger to spiral out of control with the help of his fellow thugs. As the film fast-forwards to 1981 and later 1985, we see Bulger’s ruthlessness progress forcing Connolly to cover up his trail. Connolly’s morale is questioned throughout the film, leading to his and Bulger’s demise. Maybe “ratting” out an old friend would’ve been smarter than staying loyal to a criminal. Then again, you know what Bulger does to “rats”.
You likely won’t recognize that Johnny Depp plays Bulger at first glance with his receding hairline, icy blue contacts, and Boston accent; however, through all that makeup Depp still gives a great performance. As he mercilessly kills those disloyal to him, he continues to keep a cool composure, which Depp perfectly embodies. Even the scenes where he is calmly lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling will give you the chills. It’s as if you think you know what he’s plotting until the next scene arrives with a completely new twist, leaving viewers shocked with each murder. Those who love the versatility of Depp will undoubtedly enjoy watching a darker, more mysterious side of him in Black Mass.
