16 Jan Review – Little Big Soldier

Jackie Chan created, produced, and starred in this “action-adventure-comedy.” Little Big Soldier lives up to its designated genre: it has a lot of action, it involves an adventure, and it’s funny. Ding Sheng directs the film, originally titled Da Bing Xiao Jiang, and it is primarily Mandarin spoken language with English subtitles that are comprehensive and easy to understand.

What was not easy to understand was the underlying story. Fortunately, Little Big Soldier largely features beautiful and breathtaking scenery. It also employs artistic, though at times stumbling, editing.

Here’s the thing: this is a Jackie Chan movie. Jackie Chan movies are warm and fuzzy, exciting but not too bloody, and Chinese. Little Big Soldier is no exception to this format, though that does not necessarily bode poorly for the film. If the intention of viewing cinema is to escape the real world for a while, having a reprieve from the madness of the every-day, or simply muffling constant anxiety for just a couple of hours, Little Big Soldier hits the nail on the head.

It is a fun, clean, and entertaining movie, perfect to watch with the kids, but not so much at a film festival.
