FlixFling Team Member Jasmine reviews the Icelandic Role-playing Comedy, Astropia.

Astropia, also referred to as Dorks and Damsels, is an uplifting Icelandic comedy that will provide good clean fun and laughs for the whole family.  The movie follows the life of Hildur, a beautiful high-profile woman whose world is turned upside-down when she discovers her boyfriend, Jolli, is being sent to prison.  Having been taken care of her whole life prior to his arrest, she is forced to find a way to make ends meet and must enter the working world. Her inexperience and low skill set make the job hunt unsuccessful and she’s about to give up when she takes her nephew to a local fantasy shop Astropia.

By pure coincidence, Hildur lands a job at Astropia selling fantasy role playing books and accessories to nerds of all shapes and sizes.  It is in this store that her life transforms from spoiled Barbie, to the girl next door.  Her co-workers are a comical crew of dorks, dweebs, nerds, tomboys, and generally socially awkward individuals, but through their time together unlikely friendships form and Hildur enters into the world of fantasy role-playing where she skips around in her little outfits slaying goblins and orcs with her elven and dwarf transformed co-workers.  When her boyfriend, determined to get his old life back escapes from prison and kidnaps Hildur, her new group of unlikely friends won’t let her go without a fight.  Real life blends into the fantasy role-playing as the crew of nerds come to her rescue and she realizes what the important things in life really are.

This movie is a light comedy appropriate for all ages and blends the lines between the fantasy world, comic book world, and real life in its artistic cinematography. Although not profoundly deep, it is an entertaining way to spend 90 minutes and will leave you feeling uplifted and ready to embrace your inner nerd!
