26 Sep Life After Beth Review
Death Becomes Her
Proving that anything zombie-related continues to dominate Hollywood, the newly released comedy from A24, Life After Beth, tells the story of Beth, a recently deceased 20-something who’s sudden “resurrection” begins to wreak havoc on her boyfriend and parents. In his directorial debut, Jeff Baena presents the theme of the undead in a new light, adding the comedic element of adolescent love to the mix. The result is a pleasing hour and a half experience, featuring promising performances from stars Aubrey Plaza and Dane DeHaan, as well as entertaining appearances from the likes of John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, and Anna Kendrick.
Life After Beth is unique and successful in its approach to the zombie genre because of its central idea. Functioning under the umbrella of a love story, the film acknowledges that most of its traditional zombie, blood, guts and gore fare is not intended to be taken seriously. A true “horror-comedy,” Life After Beth pokes fun at the extreme nature of most zombie flicks while remaining true to its more lighthearted subject matter. Plaza and DeHaan craft a genuinely smart and sweet relationship that is worthy of even the best romantic comedy. Life After Beth offers audiences an alternative date-night pick that is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
