Houghton Vineyard: Originally a mill town, Nannup has grown beyond its industrial beginnings and become known as the Garden Valley due to the spectacular private and public gardens. The name Nannup comes from the aboriginal word for "a meeting place by the water". The Houghton Wine Company had its first vintage in 1859 and produced only 25 gallons of wine. From humble beginnings it has grown into the largest Wine Company in Western Australia. The recently completed Houghton winery at Nannup was a pivotal step for producing premium wines. Its central location ensures that fruit quality is preserved by being able to process the fruit close to the vineyards. The winery is capable of a 5000-ton crush and utilizes the latest innovations in technology. Producing premium wines even on a large scale still requires wine makers to process small batches of fruit to preserve quality and increase complexity.
