20 May Things Aren’t Always What They Seem

This week’s new FlixFling exclusive, Blood Orange, is the psychosexual film from director Toby Tobias starring punk rock icon, Iggy Pop. Set in a stunning Spanish villa, Bill (Iggy Pop), the ageing rock star in his 60s and his young, promiscuous wife Isabelle (Kacey Barnfield) live a peculiar, but luxurious life in Ibiza Spain. Although you may initially assume Isabelle is a gold digger, we come to find that she’s actually the primary financial support in this loving relationship. For this reason we meet Lucas (Ben Lamb), the son of Isabelle’s ex-husband who shows up to get his inheritance back that he claims she stole. She denies all allegations and tries to convince Lucas to leave. When Lucas refuses to go without “his money”, Bill decides to be the one to come up with a mutual agreement for everyone. His plan takes a dramatic turn and Lucas finds himself in a dangerous and deceitful position, just where Bill and Isabelle wanted him.

Toby Tobias’ directorial debut delivers an enticing thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you try to predict what might happen next. Each scene gets a bit more intense than the last and seemingly contradicts the aesthetically pleasing, minimalist setting of Isabelle and Bill’s modern villa. Beyond its surface though, Blood Orange digs deep into the themes of gender equality, sexuality, pride, and loyalty making this week’s FridayFlix pick one you’ll want to watch again and again.
