29 Apr Leave The Real World Behind

Watch it before it hits theaters! High Rise is this week’s FridayFlix pick that’s available on FlixFling before it’s theatrical release on May 13th. Starring Tom Hiddleston and Sienna Miller, High Rise follows Dr. Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) as he moves into a futuristic high-rise apartment building that offers him everything he could imagine. Dr. Laing settles into his luxury apartment with the upper class and quickly becomes acquainted with his neighbors. Those among his social class are whom he meets first; such as Charlotte (Sienna Miller) the wealthy and beautiful single mother, and Mr. Royal (Jeremy Irons) the perplex designer of the building. Life seems to be ideal for the high society, however when the power goes out the high class upstairs gets mixed up with the lower class downstairs. The occupants’ resort to violence, chaos, and debauchery as the building suddenly turns into a war among social classes.

Director Ben Wheatley has taken J.G. Ballard’s 1975 social critique novel to make a creative black comedy film that showcases Wheatley’s flashy and futuristic approach. He proudly creates a sense of difference among the classes with exaggerated circumstances. As the upper class throws exclusive parties filled with decadent dresses and wigs, the lower class is typically doing drugs and fighting in their dark and tacky apartments. High Rise sets its own trends with its conspicuous settings and abstract editing making it a film that those with a love for distinct creativity won’t want to miss.
