The Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. History

This week’s FridayFlix features one of the most controversial movies of the year, American Sniper. The true story follows Bradley Cooper’s character, Chris Kyle, through his four brutal tours in the Iraq war, as he becomes the most lethal sniper in U.S. History. Viewers first meet Chris Kyle as he aims his rifle at a mother and child who plan to launch a grenade at a group of Marines close-by. This emotional state foreshadows the rest of the story as you witness Kyle’s pursuit to keep his “brothers” and country protected. As Kyle attempts to achieve his ever evading goal of victory on these harrowing tours, the more detached he finds himself from his wife Taya, played by Sienna Miller, and children back in Texas. When Kyle does finally return home, he realizes it’s the war that he cannot leave behind.

Director Clint Eastwood presents the story in a very emotional and accurate light as he focuses entirely on Kyle’s point of view. Eastwood explores the realities of the effects that war has on our soldiers, as well as the impact that it makes on their families. Ironically, Taya seems to speak with her husband on the phone at the most distressful of times. These scenes portray that as Kyle tries to balance both lifestyles, war is inevitably taking over.  Although it may be difficult at times to watch his family suffer without his full support, viewers are continuously reminded that Kyle is dedicated to his belief that he must protect his country above all, even the family he loves. There is no denying the respect this man deserves, making American Sniper a must-see movie this weekend!
