Batman to Birdman

As the entertainment industry’s illustrious award season approaches, all of Hollywood is clamoring to rate and review the best films of the year. Among the top contenders for the 2014-2015 seasons is Birdman, the mesmerizing genre-hybrid film from acclaimed director, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Featuring an all-star cast, mind-bending camera work and cinematography, Inarritu’s latest has been generating all kinds of buzz. Paramount to the film’s success is leading man, Michael Keaton, who makes a truly unexpected turn as an aging actor on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Keaton’s breakthrough performance has been noted as something of a comeback for the 63 year old actor, thrusting him into the spotlight like never before. This week, FlixFling is celebrating Keaton by featuring one of his most iconic roles, Batman, in Tim Burton’s 1989 film.

The film that has spawned one of cinema’s most successful franchises, Batman (1989) tells the now familiar tale of Bruce Wayne and his quest to rid Gotham City of evil. Batman meets his match in the Joker, a villainous murder with a twisted sense of humor. With Keaton as Batman and veteran actor Jack Nicholson as his adversary, Batman comes alive with suspense and intrigue. Director Tim Burton forever changed the tone of the comic book movie by introducing dark themes and crafting distinct environments for his characters to inhabit. The original is almost always the best, and Batman is no exception to this rule.
